Besides the qualification as a paramedic, the about 300 paramedics working for the DRF Luftrettung have a minimum of 5 years full-time work experience in emergency ground services. Working on intensive care transport helicopters and ambulance aircraft requires special training as anaesthetics/intensive care nurse and corresponding work experience or at least considerable additional knowledge in this field.
Annual medical trainings are mandatory for paramedics. In addition, paramedics are trained HEMS Crew Members and undergo constant training programs. This additional qualification allows them to assist the pilots with navigation and air space observation. Some of the paramedics in the air rescue alliance are trained rescue winch operators.
